5 Helpful Essentials I Pack in My Diaper Bag These Days (Toddler and Baby Edition)

Life with a toddler and a baby means your diaper bag needs to be both functional and flexible. I’ve evolved from over-packing everything but the kitchen sink to a streamlined system that still has everything we need for all-day adventures. Below is my current go-to diaper bag setup — from the must-haves to the sneaky extras that literally save the day.

My Go-To Diaper Bag

First things first — the bag itself matters. A great diaper bag should be comfortable to wear, compartmentalized, and big enough for two kids’ stuff without feeling like a suitcase.

For those who prefer to browse on their own, I’ve mentioned the 10 features of a good diaper bag in my post on Diaper Bag Selection, so you can check that out for more info.

Here’s the exact one I use:

The Checklist: What’s Inside My Bag

I break my diaper bag into categories that make sense for both kids + convenience. Most of these are also backed by expert parenting sources like The Bump and Pampers’ diaper bag checklist (highly recommended for more general guidance).

1. Diapering Essentials

  • Diapers & Pull-Ups – Always pack extra! Toddlers may not go through as many as babies, but having backups prevents total meltdown mode, especially if you’ll be gone for a while. I stick to Huggies because I feel it’s better for my kids’ skin, but it’s totally up to you what you feel is best for your kids.
  • Wipes – I keep a full pack plus a travel pack. Great for messy hands or surfaces, too. I used to use the Huggies sensitive line, but my daughter’s skin was already rash-filled and wasn’t getting better, so I’ve switched to homemade wipes, and I plan to stick with that.
  • Diaper Cream – For rash prevention (especially out in public). I use the Cetaphil Baby Diaper Rash Cream for my kids, and it always gets rid of rashes in no time.
  • Disposable bags or wet bags – For dirty clothes or diapers on the go.

2. Feeding & Snacks

Whether you’re breastfeeding, formula feeding, or introducing solids:

  • Bottle and nipples or feeding utensils
  • Snacks for toddler (everything is homemade, so we carry mini containers)
  • Water bottle for each kid
  • Bibs and washcloths

Packing snacks and water, especially for toddlers, makes outings so much smoother once they’re on solids.

3. Clothes + Weather Add-Ons

  • Extra outfit for both baby & toddler
  • Socks or hat (depending on the weather)
  • Lightweight blanket: doubles as a nursing cover, shade, or picnic mat

4. Health & Comfort

  • Sunscreen, especially in spring or summer (important if you’ll be out longer). I use the Thinkbaby Sunscreen for my toddler (you can only use it for babies 6 months and up) and for myself.
  • Favourite comfort toy or pacifier (we don’t give pacifiers to our kids all the time, but we do carry one as our toddler’s teething toy)

5. Extras That Make Life Easier

These are not essentials but things I almost always have:

  • Phone and Wallet (because … life)
  • Lip balm and sunscreen for me
  • Extra shirt for me — #momlife

How I Pack It (My Organized System)

Packing really isn’t just what, it’s how. The bag I have makes it so much easier to separate and keep things in sections that are easily accessible. That way, I don’t have to pull the entire bag apart to find a single thing.

It’s similar to what professional organizers suggest for travel bags: everything in its own place so you can find it when your toddler decides it’s meltdown o’clock.

Bonus: When You’re Going Places

Consider what kind of outing you’re doing:

  • Quick errands: 3–4 diapers, wipes, 1 toy, snack and water
  • All-day adventure: Full kit, extra clothes and more snacks
  • Trips or travel: Add travel potty (if potty-training), more snacks, and comfort items

Expert sources also recommend tailoring your diaper bag to the type of outing, since not every day requires the full kit.

Final tip: Your diaper bag will evolve just like your kids. Some days you’ll over-pack, others you’ll walk out with just snacks and wipes, and that’s okay. Trust your instincts and enjoy the ride!
