5 Powerful Essentials for Postpartum Recovery (Down-There Edition)

Postpartum Recovery

Alright, fellow moms — let’s be real. Everyone’s quick to tell you what the baby needs in your hospital bag, but what about you?

When I went into labour last year, I had no clue what I needed for myself for postpartum recovery. I saw all those Pinterest checklists with snacks, phone chargers, and cozy socks… but no one warned me about the real pain — and how much care your down-there area actually needs. In fact, the Mayo Clinic’s postpartum care guide explains just how important proper hygiene and healing are during this time.

As a first-time mom, I didn’t even know vaginal care products were a thing, and no one around me had used them either. That first night in the hospital? Rough. I brought only adult diapers and called it a day. It wasn’t until a week later that I figured out what I actually needed — and once I did, things got so much better.

So here I am, sharing my top 5 “down-there” postpartum recovery products for your hospital bag. Trust me — your future self will thank you.

1. Peri Bottle

Let me just say it — the hospital peri bottles suck. The one I got was a basic squeeze bottle that barely cleaned anything and honestly made things worse. The angle was awkward, and it sometimes even splattered blood back. Every bathroom trip was uncomfortable, and that tiny bottle did nothing to help.

Then I discovered the Frida Mom Peri Bottle — and let me tell you, game changer. I couldn’t believe no one had mentioned it to me before — not in the checklists, not even the hospital staff.

Using a peri bottle while urinating helps reduce the stinging sensation and keeps everything much cleaner. Just make sure to get a good one — angled neck, easy grip, and steady pressure. I loved the Frida Mom version and highly recommend it.

2. Disposable Underwear / Adult Diapers

I brought adult diapers to the hospital — just a random pack I grabbed from Walmart. At first, they felt uncomfortable. The material would cling to my stitches, and taking them off was irritating.

But once I paired them with the right recovery products, they were more manageable. Still, I ended up preferring maxi pads paired with disposable underwear. That combo worked best for me.

Keep in mind that postpartum bleeding is no joke, especially during the first week. If you go the maxi pad route, I highly suggest using disposable underwear first — it saves your regular ones from stains and saves you from extra laundry while recovering.

For adult diapers: I used Always Discreet

For disposable underwear: Try Frida Mom

3. Witch Hazel Cleansing Pads

Witch hazel pads are amazing for soothing soreness and reducing inflammation down there. That said, I personally found them more helpful once the heavy bleeding slowed down. During the first week, I was too sore to touch anything, and using them felt like too much.

Still, when you’re ready, they’re a fantastic substitute for toilet paper — especially after rinsing with the peri bottle. Just dab gently and feel the cooling relief.

I recommend the Tucks Personal Cleansing Pads — they really do help when it matters most.

4. Cooling Pad Liners / Perineal Ice Packs

Cooling is essential after delivery. My favorite product during recovery was definitely witch hazel pad liners — I went through them so fast! You simply place one over your pad, and when everything’s pulled together, you get instant relief.

These liners help with swelling and pain, and some moms even prefer them over witch hazel pads. You can also use perineal ice packs for a stronger cooling effect. I tried reusable clay ones and liked them, but the liners were my go-to.

For reusable ice packs: Check out Vecozey with washable sleeves

For liners: I used Mama & Wish

Other great brands: Frida Mom, which also has 2-in-1 Ice Maxi Pads (disposable)

5. Perineal Spray / Balm

Okay, I saved the best for last. After rinsing with the peri bottle, I’d spray on a perineal spray, and it was like instant magic. So cooling, so soothing — exactly what I needed.

Later in recovery, once the bleeding slowed down, I started using perineal balm. It helped reduce swelling and kept the area feeling calm and clean.

Both products are part of the Earth Mama postpartum care line — natural, gentle, and effective.

Budget-Friendly Tips

Buying everything individually can add up fast. If you’re trying to stay on budget, look for postpartum recovery bundles.

Earth Mama Recovery Kit includes: perineal spray, balm, and herbal sitz bath sachets (which I’ll talk more about in a future post!).

Frida Mom Postpartum Kit includes: peri bottle, disposable underwear, ice pads, liners, perineal foam, socks, nursing gown, and more.

Ready to Pack Like a Pro?

All of these items are essential for healing, comfort, and sanity after birth. To make things easier, I suggest preparing two separate bags — one packed specifically for labor, and another stocked with your recovery essentials. That way, you’ll have exactly what you need, right when you need it. Don’t let your postpartum experience catch you off guard like mine did.

Walking around with constant irritation isn’t just physically painful — it messes with your mood, too. And while a little pain is natural after childbirth, if we can make it more manageable… why not?

Remember: packing your hospital bag isn’t just about a checklist — it’s part of preparing yourself for one of life’s biggest transitions. You deserve to feel supported and prepared.

Take care of your baby, yes — but take care of you, too. You’ve got this.

What are you adding to your hospital bag? Or is there something that helped you during recovery that I didn’t mention? Drop your thoughts in the comments — I’d love to hear from you (and so will other moms!).
